101 Addressing Weight Regain with Angela Fitch, MD

In this episode I bring you my conversation with Dr Angela Fitch. Dr Fitch is medical doctor at Massachusetts General Weight Center in Boston, Massachusetts.  As you are about to hear, her role is very comprehensive in that she provides obesity medicine care for pediatrics and adults seeking medical and bariatric surgery as part of their treatment plan for their obesity. There were many directions we could have taken this conversation based on her depth of knowledge but our focus in this episode is on weight regain after bariatric surgery– what’s normal, what’s not normal, and regardless, what one might do about it.

  • There is not an ideal diet, or one size fits all. In general, it’s about whole foods made of plants and protein. Protein goal: 1.5 grams per kilo of ideal body weight. For most people that’s between 60-120 grams per day.
  • Anthocyanins found in blueberries has been shown to help prevent Alzheimer’s.
  • Phytonutrients from plants.
  • SAD: Standard American Diet.

  • Advice to parents with children- engage children in choice behaviors.
  • Picky eaters are created not born.
  • Adults who share a home with other adults- ideally everyone should be together on their dietary plans because it’s the right thing to do.
  • The role obesity medications can play in helping prevent weight regain or treat it if it occurs.
  • Being more proactive with medications.
  • A call for more philanthropy to help fund needed research.

Is there a transcript of this podcast for those who cannot hear?

Hi Roselle, I am sorry there is not. Transcriptions of the each episode would cost $75-$150 per episode, depending on the length. I keep my podcast up and running on a skeletal budget as it is so I cannot afford this overhead. Having said that, at a future date I may consider taking this on if I created a platform by which people could purchase the transcript at a price that meets their budget and covers my costs. I am open to considering this if it helps people and balances out financially. Reeger
