059 MBSAQIP Accreditation

by reeger on September 8, 2015

In this episode I am going to take you on a walk of sorts, an MBSAQIP walk. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you will soon.

For starters, MBSAQIP stands for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. What you’re about to hear are my reflections, sort of “A day in the life of Reeger Cortell” while the program where I work, Southern Oregon Bariatric Center, was undergoing our site survey in June, 2015.

I feel it is important for you to know about this process because, for better or worse, MBSAQIP comprises the rigorous standards by which all bariatric surgery programs are held to in the USA.

Reading straight from their website, MBSAQIP.org, they state; “MBSAQIP works to advance safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through the accreditation of bariatric surgical centers. A bariatric surgical  center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process during which it proves that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice.”

It sounds so benign to read it. But the process of becoming MBSAQIP accredited is an important process but also not without its intrinsic, teeth-nashing frustrations. I hope you find this insiders look into the site survey process not only educational but also helpful in raising your awareness of what becoming MBSAQIP accredited entails.

In kindness,
