051 Rev. Philip Tanner

Rev. Philip Tanner, M.Div, M.Ed., had RNY Gastric Bypass on 6/24/2013. He views the surgery as one of the most important decisions of his life. Philip’s BMI went from 44.6 to 22.5 and he no longer has co-morbidities such as pre-diabetes, severe acid reflux, sleep apnea, and hyperlipidemia; however, he knows that surgery is only just the beginning of a total lifestyle change. The long-term battle is in the mind, not the belly.

He is a graduate from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Social Work then earned his MEd from San Francisco State University, focusing on technical documentation and corporate training. His professional background includes highly regulated environments such as biotechnology and healthcare. Philip also earned his MDiv focusing on Biblical Greek and Progressive Theology from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. Philip focuses on the power of language and bridging the gap between technical and non-technical, religious and secular, straight and gay, transgender and cisgender, addict and non-addict – and so many other binaries that divide us all too easily.

Philip is honored to share his story and he hopes that his personal truth will inspire others to have hope.
