JB Better

At his heaviest, Jeff Butts weighed 643 pounds. Every day was a profound struggle against exhaustion, pain, fear, and shame. 1999 he almost had bariatric surgery, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, but in his words, he “chickened out” because he was not yet ready to make the changes he knew he would need to make. Then, in 2008 two important things happened: He met a very supportive group of people who had had bariatric surgery and he discovered Dr Michelle May’s program, “Am I Hungry?” With support and newly learned skills helping him tackle his eating disorder, he underwent RYGB on November 10, 2008.  He now has a life he could only dream of before.

In This Episode we discuss:

  • Jeff’s life before November 10, 2008
  • What it was like to go through day to day life: Exhaustion, strategizing, constant planning, reclusiveness.
  • The roles of lying and deception. Was he fooling anyone?
  • The turning point(s) that lead him to both “Am I Hungry” and gastric bypass.
  • What was the different about “Am I Hungry” versus other programs he had tried
  • Finding his community and the difference this made.
  • Paying it forward.
  • Having RYGB surgery.
  • Doing “Am I Hungry” again after bariatric surgery.
  • What surprised him about life after bariatric surgery.
  • When hunger, trouble, triggers, and temptation came knocking after RYGB, what was
  • different this time.
  • Asking for help early and often.
  • Setting Rules, not Rigid Boundaries.
  • His bucket list: What he has accomplished and what still remains to be done.
  • Jeff’s advice if you are considering bariatric surgery.
