Robanne Robin had Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass on 8/4/2009. At the time she had surgery she weighed 300 pounds. She was pre-diabetic, had bad knees, was depressed, and had two episodes of a very elevated heart rate that landed her in the emergency room each time. Now, almost 5 years later she is beyond healthy in all ways (body, mind, spirit), is a certified Hip-Hop dance instructor, and weighs 150 pounds. But having said that, for the first time in her life, her weight is not the most important or defining feature of her identity. For Robanne, it’s not about the weight anymore. It’s about whole person health and being true to her motto: STRONG is the new Skinny.

In this episode Robanne shares:

    • The first time she remembers seeking out food for emotional comfort (age 5).

  • Her early years of stress, instability, and desires to belong.
  • Her battles with anorexia and then bulimia as a teen and young adult.
  • How in her mid-twenties her weight pendulum swung to the other extreme: Obesity.
  • Her emotional states during all these years.
  • The turning point that brought her to her decision to have WLS.
  • Her early resistance to changing her behaviors after WLS, especially regarding exercise.
  • The message she received that helped her get to the gym.
  • Her journey from hardly being able to walk on a treadmill for 30 min to becoming a certified Hip-Hop dance instructor.
  • The tools she uses each day to help her be successful.
  • How her relationship with her self, her children, and her husband are better than ever.
  • Her favorite quote: Fitness is not about being better than anyone else. It is about being better than you used to be.

My favorite quotes from Robanne:

  • “You can’t change it if you are not aware of what’s going on or you are choosing to not know what’s going on.”
  • “When I take better care of me, I can take better care of others.”
