Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Perioperative Nutritional, Metabolic, and Nonsurgical Support of the Bariatric Surgery Patient- 2013 Update: Cosponsored by the American Association of the Clinical Endocrinologists, The Obesity Society, and the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.

In this WLS Podcast episode #10, I go over highlights of the clinical practice guidelines addressed in the 2013 update.

Included in this review are aspects of the seven questions addressed in the guidelines:

1) Which patients should be offered bariatric surgery?

2) Which bariatric surgical procedure should be offered?

3) How should potential candidates for bariatric surgery be managed preoperatively?

4) What are the elements of medical clearance for bariatric surgery?

5) How can early postoperative care be optimized?

6) How can optimal follow-up of bariatric surgery be achieved?

7) What are the criteria for hospital admission after bariatric surgery?

These guidelines are intended for practitioners of bariatric care but the information contained herein is very relevant for people who are considering or who have had WLS.

I realize that a 60min episode on clinical practice guidelines is long and potentially dry (ok, maybe even a little boring), non-the-less, I strongly encourage you to listen to the entire episode, there is important information provided throughout, information that will benefit you no matter if you are a patient of bariatric surgery or a provider.
