009 Dumping Syndrome after WLS

by reeger on October 10, 2013

In this episode of the WLSP I go over Dumping Syndrome starting with:slice of soft cake

  • Pre-WLS surgery upper gastrointestinal tract functions.
  • WLS changes that make Dumping Syndrome more likely.

DEFINITION OF DUMPING SYNDROME:

  • Early Dumping Syndrome
  •       Intestinal symptoms &
  •       Vasomotor symptoms.
  • Late Dumping Syndrome:
  •       Reactive Hypoglycemia.

MANAGEMENT OF DUMPING SYNDROME:

  • Stop ALL simple carbohydrates like table sugar, brown sugar, honey, corn syrup, maple syrup, molasses, candy, chocolate, cookies, muffins, biscuits, jams, jellies, ice cream, cakes, pies, chips, crackers, packaged cereals or instant cereals, all sugar sweetened drinks including juices, sports drinks, regular sodas, and designer coffee drinks. Also avoid white foods such as white breads/bagels, white rice, and white pasta.

FRUITS can be a problem too, but not all fruits are created equally.
DAIRY can cause symptoms because:

  • Lactose can cause Dumping in some people.Dairy products can have added sugars (yogurts, flavored milks, etc).
  • WLS can cause lactose intolerance if the body loses its ability to make Lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down Lactose.
  • WATER
  • Keep liquids and meals separate. There are good reasons for this.

LAYING DOWN after meals can help.
INCREASING FIBER can help.

WHAT ARE COMPLEX CARBS.
IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING MEDICAL ADVICE.
DUMPING SYNDROME USUALLY GOES AWAY: For better or for worse.

  • You don’t need simple carbs. They don’t own you.
  • You have come to far to give up now and slip down a slope that landed you in a land of obesity before.
  • You deserve better.
  • You are strong enough.
  • I believe in you.
